Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian said that Venezuela is 'capable of handling their own internal affairs' during a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday as Caracas grapples with disputes over their general election results.
"All parties should respect the choice made by the Venezuelan people and we believe that the Venezuelan Government and people are capable of handling their own internal affairs," he stated.
Venezuela's National Electoral Council proclaimed Maduro the winner with 51 percent to his main challenger's 44 percent. It marks his third consecutive election victory. He has been in power since 2013, while his United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) has governed the country since 2007.
Protests across Caracas and other cities in Venezuela had erupted following the announcement of the results, which demonstrators and the opposition claimed to be 'marred by fraud' after the opposition also claimed it won with more than 70 percent of the votes cast, although they did not provide any evidence.
During the briefing, Lin also dismissed American claims of Chinese election interference, stating "China has never interfered and will never interfere in the United States election. We are opposed to the US's dissemination of false information to discredit China and to the US election's use of China as a pretext."
"The United States has grossly interfered in China's internal affairs on Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet, smeared and attacked China on maritime issues, held a cold war mentality, manipulated bloc politics and provoked confrontation between camps, seriously undermining regional peace and stability and jeopardising the security interests of other countries," he added.
Lin also addressed a conference held by the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, a group of hundreds of lawmakers from 35 countries. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te welcomed all attendees and noted that Taiwan would protect democracy from 'the threat of authoritarian expansionism.'
"The so-called alliance mentioned above has always been maliciously speculating on China-related issues and spreading lies and rumours about China, and it has no credibility at all. [...] We advise the parliamentarians concerned to put aside their ideological bias, stop using the Taiwan issue to interfere in China's internal affairs and do more to benefit bilateral relations rather than the other way around," he commented.
"The one-China principle is the basic norm in international relations and the general consensus of the international community, and it is the direction of the people's hearts and the trend of the world. The Lai Ching-te Administration is moving against the current, seeking independence and provoking provocations, and using force to seek independence, and it is doomed to a dead end," the spokesperson continued.
Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory under the 'One China' principle, while the island has never officially declared independence.
