Description

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning denounced former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen's visit to the Czech Republic and other European countries this month during a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

"We urge the Czech Republic and relevant countries to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and not to provide facilitation for 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces in any form or do things that harm bilateral relations with China," Mao said.

"We also have a clear message for the DPP authorities: seeking 'Taiwan independence' is bound to fail, and any political manipulation and attempt to solicit foreign support for that agenda will prove futile," she continued.

Tsai Ing-wen, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which opposes Beijing's territorial claims on Taiwan, was elected in 2016. Following the elections in January 2023, Tsai stepped down and was succeeded by President Lai Ching-te.

Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory under the 'One China' principle, while the island has never officially declared independence. The US and its allies argue the strait falls under international waters and is a vital trade route.

Mao also condemned an article recently published by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, calling it a 'severe misjudgment'. In the article, Blinken described China as the US's 'most consequential long-term strategic competitor' that has "the intent and the means to reshape the international system."

"Major-country competition is not what the world needs and will by no means solve the US's own problems or address challenges facing the world. The US's view of the international landscape and its definition of relations with China through the lens of strategic competition show how the US clings to the Cold War mentality," she said.

Addressing the first anniversary of the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, Mao said that achieving a ceasefire and delivering humanitarian assistance to those in Gaza are a 'pressing priority'. She also urged for a two-state solution implemented through a "more broad-based, authoritative and effective international peace conference."

"The legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people need to be realised and the reasonable security concerns of Israel need to be paid attention to," she noted.

The spokesperson also announced that Beijing would provide emergency humanitarian medical aid to Lebanon at the request of the Lebanese government amid escalating hostilities with Israel.

"The Foreign Ministry worked closely and round the clock with the Ministry of Transport, the Civil Aviation Administration and Chinese embassies in Lebanon, Cyprus and other countries to protect the safety of Chinese nationals with utmost effort and swiftly transfer and evacuate them," Mao continued.

Israel began a 'limited and targeted' ground incursion against Hezbollah in Lebanon last week, after a campaign of airstrikes forced thousands to flee their homes in the south of the country.

According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, over 2,000 people have been killed since the latest escalation. Tensions were heightened following mass casualties after pagers and handheld radios used by Hezbollah exploded last month, which the group blamed on Israel - although the country did not comment.

The sides have exchanged cross-border fire in the north of Israel since the outbreak of the 2023 Gaza war.
