Description

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock outlined possible sanctions against Russia in the event of aggression against Ukraine during comments at the Bundestag on Thursday.

"In the event of a new aggression, we have a wide range of answers available to us, including Nord Stream 2. Yes, we always want dialogue, but in view of the current situation, toughness is also needed," she said.

Baerbock placed hope however in the capacity of dialogue to help chart a course through the present tensions, amid recent in-person diplomatic discussions including a Normandy Format meeting.

"Whether something came of it, we don't know. No one can say this with 100 percent certainty in this present moment. But those who talk, don't shoot. It is therefore fatal to simply dismiss the resumption of dialogue as it is now," she said.

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations it is amassing forces at the border with the intention of invading Ukraine.
