Description

Average annual temperatures have been rising in Russia more than 2.5 times faster than the global average, President Vladimir Putin told the G20 summit in Rome, speaking via videolink from Novo-Ogaryovo on Sunday.

He also explained that in 10 years it has increased by almost half a degree.

In his speech Putin also touched on the issue of carbon intensity's reduction. He said the carbon intensity of the Russian economy "has declined by an average of 2.7 per cent annually, more than the world as a whole and even more than in the G7 countries."

He concluded that reducing emissions of hydrocarbons and greenhouse gases is not enough to fight global warming. In his view, it is necessary to reduce the amount of these substances in the atmosphere.

"We need to increase the absorption of greenhouse gases, and here in Russia, as in a number of other countries, the absorption potential of our forests, tundra, agricultural land, seas and marshes is enormous. In order to make full use of such existing potential, we plan to significantly improve the quality of forest management", said Putin.
