At least 39 people were reportedly killed in Gaza City on Wednesday as two schools housing displaced Palestinians were destroyed by shelling.

Footage shows Civil Defence crews working amid the rubble of the Al-Zahra School while volunteers are seen searching for casualties.

"It was found that the Israeli occupation machine had simultaneously targeted two schools. Civil Defence crews went to these schools and others to evacuate the injured people who were still beneath the debris, and our teams have been working there until now," a member of Gaza'sCivil Defence said.

"There are many injured and several additional martyrs in this place; the crews are still working hard to evacuate the remaining injured despite the lack of capabilities," he added.

According to an IDF statement, Israeli forces had conducted an 'intelligence-based strike' on Hamas' command and control centres' embedded in the 'Abdelfattah Hamouda' and 'Al-Zahra' schools.

"The school compounds were used by Hamas terrorists and commanders as command and control centres, from which they planned and carried out attacks against IDF troops and the State of Israel," the statement added.

The Hamas-Israel war erupted after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.
