German MP Sahra Wagenknecht hit back at Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s claim that that her 'Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance' (BSW) party's rise was a 'security risk' - and said the real risk of 'people like you, Ms Baerbock' - during her speech at an anti-war rally marking German Unity Day on Thursday.

"I would like to say to Ms. Baerbock that she has misunderstood something. A security risk for Germany is people like you, Ms Baerbock; they are people who are playing the military card; they are people who are dragging us ever more into wars. They are a security risk for our country. And we are here today to stop them because we don't want that. We don't want to be dragged into wars," Wagenknecht said.

Last month Baerbock claimed the BSW rise showed 'how Russian propaganda is catching on' and said that "if this also leads to parties winning that are closer to autocratic thinking than to our German constitution, then this risks the security of our country."

The leftist alliance has strongly denied claims of support for Russia, but advocated peace talks and a halt to NATO weaponry for Ukraine. In last month's regional votes, it came third in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenberg, on nearly 16 percent, 12 percent and 13.5 percent respectively.

"I also find it appalling how discussions are taking place in our country these days, how people are being put down and defamed when they are in favour of negotiations and diplomacy, how they are being portrayed as the voice of the Kremlin, as Putin's press spokesman—what a disgrace for those who discuss things like that. No, we need peace, we need diplomacy, and we need negotiations," Wagenknecht added.

She also referred to the deployment of US medium-range missiles in Germany by 2026, after thanking former Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev for making the country's reunification possible in 1990.

"I still remember that time. The Cold War was over, and the missiles disappeared. You had the feeling that there was finally peace, that there was no more fear of war. And where are we today? 30 years later, in a world that is once again in flames, there is a great war of death in the Middle East and a terrible war in Ukraine for two and a half years that threatens to spread and turn into a major European war. We are once again facing the prospect of US medium-range missiles being stationed in Germany. And we are being told that this is all normal and that there is no need to protest," she said.

The German government under Olaf Scholz has backed military support for Ukraine, and said the deployment of US missiles 'fitted exactly' with his administration's security plan. German Unity Day is celebrated annually on October 3 and commemorates the reunification of the east and west of the country.
