Description

The village of Nalitabari in northern Bangladesh's Sherpur district was seen inundated with water on Saturday as low-lying areas in the region were hit by deadly floods following days of torrential rain.

Drone footage shows large swathes of submerged countryside, while video captured from the ground shows locals traversing flooded streets in rafts and wading through waist-high water.

"Our house is underwater up to our neck," a local man said. "Everything from the main road is underwater. There is water in almost all the houses."

"Many houses were destroyed, and trees were uprooted," a second resident added. "The army has given some relief assistance to our area. Some areas have not been reached yet."

Widespread floods were reported in several districts of Bangladesh over the weekend, with the Meteorological Department issuing heavy rain alerts in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Barishal and Chattogram, warning of torrential rains, flooding, landslides and power outages.

Meanwhile, authorities in Bangladesh have reported five deaths, with more than 100,000 people stranded in the latest round of devastating floods to hit the country.

In August, at least 70 people were killed as catastrophic floods brought by monsoon rains washed over eastern Bangladesh, reportedly causing around $1,20 billion in damage.
