Description

Some of the 27 bodies of Europe-bound migrants that drowned at sea, including a baby, were recovered by the Red Crescent Society investigation unit in Libya are currently kept at the morgue of the Khoms City Hospital, as seen on Sunday.

According to local media, the Red Crescent Society recovered the bodies in two separate locations in the coastal town of Khoms, about 75 miles (120 km) west of Tripoli.

Morgue attendants were seen placing the bodies in black body bags and storing them away in the mortuary cabinets of the hospital.

An estimate of 1,500 migrants has drowned in boats and shipwrecks on the routes across the central Mediterranean in 2021, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Libya, shattered by conflict, has become a key departure point for African and Asian migrants trying to reach Europe.
