Firebrand MP George Galloway gave UK PM Rishi Sunak both barrels during a heated Prime Minister's Questions session on Wednesday, as he pressed the leader on how his telephone call with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu had gone earlier in the week.

"The prime minister told us on Monday that he was off to make a telephone call to Mr Netanyahu to urge restraint on a government that has killed and maimed well over 100,000 people in six months, 72 percent of them women and children," Galloway claimed. "Can you tell us how the telephone call went and what he will do if his advice is not taken and an unrestrained war begins?"

The Palestinian Health Ministry figures puts those killed at over 33,000, with over 76,000 wounded and many thousands more missing. Israel says it is targeting Hamas locations and infrastructure during the ongoing conflict.

Sunak replied that he was 'pleased to speak with Prime Minister Netanyahu who thanked the UK for their support of Israel's security over the weekend'.

"We also discussed the situation and how Iran is isolated on the world stage and also, I made the point to him that significant escalation is not in anyone's interest and it's a time for calm heads to prevail," Sunak continued, saying he had also 'reiterated our concern' about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

"I welcome the statements and commitments the Israeli government have made about significantly increasing aid into Gaza and now we need to see those commitments delivered," he added.

Netanyahu has promised to respond after Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel at the weekend - which Tehran claimed were a response to the airstrike on its Damascus consulate earlier this month. Israel has not claimed responsibility for that earlier attack.

Israel's allies have warned against further action against Iran.

The Israeli PM also held talks with UK Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron - and Germany's Annalena Baerbock on Wednesday - although said afterwards that: "they also have all kinds of suggestions and advice, I appreciate it, but I want to make it clear - we will make our own decisions, and the State of Israel will do everything necessary to defend itself."

Galloway was elected last month, standing in the Rochdale by-election for the Workers' Party of Britain on a platform of opposition to the Gaza war. He took nearly 40 percent of the vote, nearly 6,000 more votes than the second-placed candidate. Sunak called his victory 'beyond alarming'.
