Description

Thousands of mourners took part in an Arbaeen procession in the Kargil region of Indian Administered Kashmir on Monday, beating their chests in honour of the 72 martyrs of Karbala and as a show of unity with the people of Palestine.

The footage shows the mourners dressed in black, beating their chests and chanting slogans, with some seen carrying Palestinian flags.

"The message of Imam Hussein and Karbala is that we should help the oppressed people and fight against the oppressor. Imam Hussein always stood against the oppressor, he was killed in the battle of Karbala because he did not bow down in front of the oppressor. This gave us the message that truth always wins over falsehood," explained Islamic Scholar Sheikh Hussain Lutfi.

The march is considered a demonstration of collective grief and an affirmation of the values of justice and resistance to oppression. Participant Sheikh Mohsin explained the connection between the procession and 'Israel’s genocide in Gaza', which he said 'is not only a war but it is a fight between truth and falsehood'.

"Imam Hussein sacrificed his family to keep the truth alive always and give a clear message that we should always raise our voices for oppressed people and against the oppressors. Those who support the Palestinian cause are actually supporting the truth and those supporting Israel support the genocide," he said.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage is one of the largest religious public gatherings in the world, attracting millions of people. Food and drink are provided free of charge to pilgrims at points along the route as a show of religious solidarity and generosity. Open to people of all ages, the procession features traditional rituals including elegies and symbolic banners.

The anniversary is marked by Muslims on the 40th day after the assassination of Imam Hussein at the Battle of Karbala in 680 A.D. The holiday marks the end of the period of mourning for Imam Hussein, who was the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
