Hundreds of fans gathered in the streets of Manila on Wednesday to celebrate the return of Filipino athletes from the Olympic Games in Paris. Among them was gymnast Carlos Yulo, who won double gold medals during the 2024 Olympics.

Footage shows locals cheering and welcoming the athletes, chanting 'Yulo' as the high platforms carry them to Malacanang Palace. Musicians can be seen playing instruments as part of the parade.

"We are here to give our respect to our new hero, Carlos Yulo who gives honor to our country in the whole world. This momentous event is very hard to replicate again because 1924 since we first joined the Olympics and after 100 years, now 2024 we bagged two golds," said one of the fans, Jun Palaco.

"He and all our athletes were supported by our government because they were all invited to Malacanang Palace and they were welcomed warmly. That's why all our athletes are happy," another respondent, Anton Sucgan, said, adding: "He is the best athlete in the whole Philippines and Asia."

During the Paris Olympic Games, 24-year-old Carlos Yulo won two gold medals in the men's floor exercise and vault categories of gymnastic contests. According to media reports, the local government granted 20 million pesos (350,000 dollars) as well as corporate sponsors guaranteed to provide him with benefits including free food in local restaurants.

The gymnast became the first Philippine male athlete to win Olympic gold since 1924 when the country debuted in the Paris Olympic Games. Previously, the Philippine female weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz took the first gold medal in history.

The Philippines was ranked 37th out of 180 nations winning two gold and two bronze medals sharing the spot with Hong Kong's team in the 2024 Olympics, which concluded in Paris on August 11.

The next Summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles in 2028.

Yulo is reportedly the most award-winning gymnast, having brought his country two Olympic gold medals this year in addition to six world championship medals. In 2018, he won his first bronze medal at the world championships as well as edged into first the next year. During the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, he came the forth.
