German Chancellor Olaf Scholz joined a ceremony in Berlin on Saturday commemorating the 80th anniversary of Adolf Hitler's failed assassination attempt.

"We have come together today [...] to honour the German resistance in its entirety," the chancellor said. "And 80 years later, to continue the important conversation about what the German Resistance remains because this remains a central question of the meaning of our country, especially today in this turbulent time."

"We can no longer change the past. But in its becoming, history is in our hands," he continued. "In the present, in every present, it depends on the contribution of each and every individual. This is the only way injustice can be ended. This is the only way a better future will be possible."

Scholz emphasised that Germany's democracy is based on the 'tireless efforts' and 'commitment of every individual'.

"That's why our democracy depends on us opposing every kind of misanthropy and extremism. That's why I'm making it clear here 80 years after July 20, 1944 that those who fight our democracy will always face our determined opposition," he said.

The chancellor also reiterated Berlin's support for Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing special military operation. He claimed that Germany's history means the state can now only be 'on the side of Ukraine'.

"We cannot celebrate this July 20th without thinking about the brave citizens of Ukraine, who have been resisting the criminal Russian war of aggression for more than two years," Scholz stated

"Because of our responsibility for our own history, there can only be one place for Germany in this situation - on the side of Ukraine," he concluded.

On July 20, 1944 members of the German resistance attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime. The leader of the plot, Claus von Stauffenberg, planned to kill Hitler by detonating a hidden explosive near him.

However, Hitler only sustained minor injuries from the incident. Stauffenberg, alongside other senior resistance members, were sentenced to death and executed by a firing squad in the inner courtyard of the Bendlerblock.
