The Iranian embassy in Damascus held a mourning ceremony on Tuesday following the deaths of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, along with other officials, in a helicopter crash in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province on Sunday, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency.

Footage filmed on Tuesday shows Iranian Ambassador Hussien Akbari receiving mourners at the embassy, while some were seen leaving the hall where the ceremony was held.

Father Nizar Mabardi, Priest of Mazzah Church, expressed his condolences, stating, “Today, we are at the Iranian embassy in Damascus to offer our condolences on the death of President Raisi and his companions. This is the duty of the Syrian people. We hope they [Raisi and his companions] are righteous and saints, may their memory be eternal. We are paying tribute because it is our faithful duty between the Syrian and Iranian people.”

Syrian President Bashar Assad also extended his condolences to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei following the tragic incident. He emphasised Syria's solidarity with Iran and the families of the deceased, stating, “President Raisi’s dedication to his work and fulfilment of his responsibilities brought him to East Azerbaijan Province to inaugurate a vital project for his country before he was martyred for duty.”

The helicopter crash, which occurred during an official mission, claimed the lives of several high-ranking Iranian officials, leading to nationwide mourning and calls for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident.

The 63-year-old leader, along with his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials, was pronounced dead after the US-made Bell 212 helicopter made a difficult emergency landing in the mountains of Iran's northern East Azerbaijan province during heavy fog, although no official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled on June 28. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from leaders of UAE, Pakistan, Russia, India, Iraq, Syria, and Egypt. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
