Description

Locals in the Hamad City neighbourhood of Khan Younis were seen surveying the damage to their homes on Saturday following the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area after a week-long military operation.

Footage shows residents returning to their homes with their belongings as members of Gaza's Civil Defence scoured the rubble for bodies.

"They left nothing green or dry, and even the trees and stones were all destroyed. They left us nothing to shelter in, not even our tents. We are sitting in the streets with no water, food, or aid," a local man said.

The Civil Defence in Gaza announced in a statement that its teams had recovered three bodies from the Abu Hadrous family home and are searching for eight missing individuals under rubble in Hamad City.

"The destruction is extensive, and the catastrophe is severe. Today, Hamad City is almost a disaster zone. Most of its buildings are destroyed, around 70 percent. However, our teams are still working to recover what remains of the martyrs," a volunteer said.

The Israeli army has not officially announced the end of its operations in Khan Younis or the withdrawal from Hamad City. Palestinian media reported that the bodies of 12 Palestinians had been recovered from Hamad City, adding that IDF troops had left the area.

On August 14, the Israeli army had requested residents of areas including eastern Deir al-Balah, al-Qarara, al-Mawasi, al-Jalaa, Hamad City, and al-Nasr to evacuate to designated humanitarian zones, claiming Hamas was "using the area for terrorist activities and launching rockets."

Fighting erupted in Gaza after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 by Hamas in the Gaza strip.

The IDF launched a subsequent campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions in Gaza, killing 40,334 Palestinians and injuring 93,356 others as of the time of publication.
