French President Emmanuel Macron accused the Lebanese political leaders of "collective betrayal" over their failure to form a government, during a press conference held in Paris on Sunday.

"The Lebanese authority and political forces have chosen to privilege their partisan and individual interests to the detriment of the general interest of the country," stated Macron, adding that Lebanese politicians chose to condemn the country to "chaos."

"I therefore decide to take notice of this collective betrayal and the refusal of Lebanese officials to commit in good faith to the contract that France offered them on September 1st," said the French president.

Macron had been pushing Lebanese leaders to form a non-partisan Cabinet with specialists who can work on enacting pressing reforms to help the country out of a devastating economic and financial crisis, worsened by the Beirut port blasts of August 4.

Lebanese PM-designate Mustafa Adib stepped down on Saturday after failing to form a new government.

The French president added that an international conference is planned for the end of October to mobilise help for the Lebanese people.
