Description

Thousands of spectators gathered along the Shinano River in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, to enjoy the spectacular "Grand Firework Display," which kicked off on Friday as part of a two-day festival.

Footage captures the night sky illuminated with a dazzling array of fireworks in various colours and shapes, while attendees watch and film the event with their phones.

Aika, one of the attendees, shared her experience: "I was moved from the bottom of my heart. This was my first time to see the Nagaoka Fireworks, and I could feel the wishes, emotions, and thoughts of many people packed into these fireworks. It was really beautiful."

Chinami, another spectator, noted: "It is characterised by its long horizontal view along the river, which is different from other fireworks shows, and I was very impressed."

The Nagaoka "Grand Firework Display" is one of Japan's top three fireworks festivals, traditionally held annually on 2-3 August, attracting millions from around the world. The show lasts approximately two hours.

Following the 2004 Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake, the festival introduced the "Phoenix Firework Display," accompanied by music, to commemorate the victims of both the earthquake and the Nagaoka bombing of 1945.

Originally held in the 19th century, the Grand Firework Display was paused during wartime but has continued annually since 1946.
