Description

The funeral of Maher Al-Jazi, a Jordanian who fatally shot three Israeli soldiers at the Allenby crossing on September 8, was held on Tuesday. His remains were returned to Jordan by Israeli authorities and handed over to Jordanian officials.

Footage from the funeral captures the scene at Al-Husseini Mosque in Ma'an Governorate, where locals gathered to pay their respects. The procession involved carrying Al-Jazi's shrouded body on their shoulders and congregating near his grave.

Shadi al-Jazi, Maher’s brother, called the funeral a momentous occasion, declaring, “Allah Almighty has honoured us to bid farewell to the body of my brother, the Muslim martyr Maher… This is just the beginning, and it is a message to Netanyahu and the occupying entity: it is the beginning of victory, God willing, and the Islamic nation returns to jihad, as it is the key for defending religion.”

Maher’s uncle, Habes al-Jazi, spoke of the pride felt by Jordanian and Arab youth regarding the attack, attributing it to the "arrogance of Netanyahu and his government."

Al-Jazi, a truck driver from Jordan, opened fire on Israeli security forces at the Allenby crossing, where he was subsequently neutralised by Israeli police.

Hamas hailed the attack as a 'heroic' act of resistance against Israeli occupation and its actions.

The Allenby Bridge, situated east of Jericho, is a vital crossing for Palestinians travelling between Jordan and the West Bank and for truck transport.

Tensions in the West Bank have escalated since October 7, with official figures reporting over 690 Palestinian deaths due to Israeli forces or settlers and at least 26 Israelis killed in Palestinian attacks.
