Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that US sanctions on the country could end 'today,' if negotiators were given the 'authority,' while speaking at a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.
"I declare to the people of Iran that the government has ended the war. The government, through the self-sacrifice of the people, and according to the instructions of the Supreme Leader, has brought the United States to the negotiating table in Vienna, and has spoken and resolved important issues," said Rouhani.
Rouhani added that Iran's chief negotiator Abbas Araghchi had been given the authority to go ahead and finalise a deal in Vienna.
The president is set to leave power in August 2021, when President-elect Ebrahim Raisi will officially take office and he defended his legacy at the meeting.
"We ran the country without oil. No one came to say that you did a good job, you ruled the country of Iran for the first time in history after over one hundred years of oil discovery without oil," he said.
