At least 17 people were reportedly killed amid the violent shooting carried out at two houses in the village near Lusikisiki, South Africa's Eastern Cape Province on Friday night.

Footage filmed on Sunday shows police officers and emergency service employees working on the crime site during the ongoing investigation as well as some of them are seen interviewing the witnesses. The investigation site is also seen blocked with police barrier tape.

According to the local police department statement, four people in the first homestead as well as 19 in the second homestead were killed by an undetermined shooter.

The national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe reported that six people including one two-month-old baby survived after the attack as well as one of the victims was delivered to the hospital in critical condition.

The spokesperson also stated that the police have been continuing the search of the suspects and investigation to determine the cause of the killings. The reason for the attack hasn't been determined at the time of publication.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu reported on Saturday that a group of detectives and forensic experts was deployed for the ongoing investigation.

Mass shootings have become increasingly common in South Africa in recent years. According to the police official crime statistics, 6,198 murders were recorded in the period from April to June this year across the country, as media reported.
