Description

Dozens of tourists and locals flocked to Enoshima on Sunday as the Japanese island transformed into a colourful wonderland for the 2024 Lantern Festival.

Footage shows visitors walking around the island as hundreds of lanterns lined the coastline, while Enoshima Shrine became the centerpiece for immersive digital art projections.

"It's a magical place. All the shrines, all the vibes around here are amazing and that's the main reason why we are here, we feel like in a peaceful way," said Luca, a tourist from Italy.

"It feels very different and it looks very beautiful with all the lights and different lanterns. It's a nice, wonderful experience," added Mega, an Indian tourist visiting the area.

Enoshima Shrine lights up with digital art that recounts the legendary tale of Enoshima Engi. The story speaks of a fearsome five-headed dragon that terrorized the island for over a millennium until its heart softened with love for the goddess Benzaiten, the patroness of the arts.

Enoshima Lanterns 2024 takes place between July 20 to August 31. During the last weekend of the event, August 24-25, the Samuel Cocking Garden is also scheduled to feature a unique shadow puppetry play.
