In his first cabinet meeting in Jerusalem on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett criticised the newly-elected Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi, dubbing him 'the hangman of Tehran'.

"Of all the people that (Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei could have chosen, he chose 'the hangman of Tehran,' the man infamous among Iranians and across the world for leading the 'death committees' that executed thousands of innocent Iranian citizens throughout the years," said Bennett and added, "These guys are murderers, mass murderers."

Raisi is accused to have been especially involved in the 1988 executions of Iranian political prisoners.

On Saturday, the incumbent judiciary chief of Iran won the presidential election in a landslide victory amid a low voter turnout in the Islamic Republic.
