Footage filmed on Thursday shows an overflowing river and streets and houses flooded with huge amounts of water, while locals can be seen walking across the water in the city of Sylhet. Evacuation centres could be seen where locals were forced to leave their homes.

"All our houses were washed away by the flood water. We came here with some kind of life and took shelter. We have been staying here since the day of Eid [al-Adha], but we have not received any government support," said Akur Hossain, a local. "We are happy if the government helps us".

Thousands of Sylhet district's residents have been evacuated to shelters as approximately 864 villages were trapped underwater amid severe flood alerts following ongoing heavy rains falling since Saturday.

"All our houses have been submerged in water. All the paddy and rice that was there was destroyed in the water," said Phul Banu, one of those evacuated. "We have taken refuge here with our children to survive. People brought us here by boat after water entered the house. But we have not received any kind of support till now".

"We came to the shelter on Monday afternoon on the day of Eid [al-Adha], we have been staying here for four days today," said Hanufa Begum, one of those evacuated. "Our house is still underwater. We are cooking and eating what we brought from home".

The flood situation in Sylhet district was mixed on Thursday, with reduced rainfall improving some areas but the Surma-Kushiara rivers still overflowing at six points due to run-off from the Indian Hills upstream, according to local media.

The Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Sylhet, Sheikh Russel Hasan, claimed that around one million people had been affected by the floods. Disaster response teams have been deployed for rescue, relief and shelter monitoring.

Local media reported that flood damage in Sylhet had left 10,000-12,000 customers without power due to incessant rains and landslides.

Road traffic across Bangladesh was blocked due to major flooding on main roads like Companiganj, Gowainghat, and Kanaighat in Sylhet. Local authorities have banned travel tours to tourist sites.
