Thousands of people took to the streets of Madrid on Sunday to rally against the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and call for early elections. Leaders of the conservative Vox and Popular Party were also seen at the protest.

Footage shows thousands of people gathering at Plaza de Castilla holding Spanish flags and banners reading: 'Alert: European Union: Spain is already a communist dictatorship', 'Spain is no longer a democracy, it's beginning to be a dictatorship' and others.

Among the rally participants was the leader of the conservative Vox party, Santiago Abascal, who spoke to journalists, noting that "this government is ruining the Spaniards, has betrayed them, has lied to them in the elections and is willing to do anything to stay in power."

"Today the Spaniards, whatever the government says, are poorer than when Pedro Sanchez came to power," commented Abascal.

Others mentioned the 'corruption' scandals linked to Prime Minister Sanchez and his family.

"Corruption of everyone around Pedro Sanchez, from his wife, brother, father, the party, we are facing a government that has stopped at nothing, has not stopped at Maduro's gold, nor at the applause of Hamas, an extremist government, a corrupt government, a coup government that we have been denouncing for four years," Santiago Abascal added.

Sanchez has repeatedly rejected corruption allegations made against his wife Begona Gomez, claiming them to be politically motivated. In April, media outlets reported that Sanchez considered resigning over the row.

"We have a government that at the moment is incapable of moving anything forward, a government that is also chopping up equality and the Rule of Law for its survival," said Alfonso Serrano, Senator of Popular Party, who also attended the rally.

According to the authorities, 25,000 demonstrators took part in the protest in Madrid's Castilla Square, however the rally organisers claimed that the number of participants was closer to 400,000 people.

Sanchez was reappointed prime minister a year ago after he succeeded in forming a coalition government of left-wing and separatist groups, particularly the 'Together for Catalonia' (Junts) party, which is controlled by former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont. In return, the separatist leader demanded an amnesty for people prosecuted for actions related to Catalonia's 2017 independence referendum.
