Description

Ecuador has to provide protection to WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange, former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said in a video interview with RT in Brussels on Friday.

“There is no choice, Julian Assange is Ecuadorian citizen. He has Ecuadorian citizenship. So according to our constitution, he cannot be extradited to the United States or wherever,” Correa said, reacting to reports that Assange was going to be expelled from the Ecuadorian embassy in London in a matter of “hours and days.”

He went on talking about Ecuador’s current leader, Lenin Moreno, and alleged that Moreno at the beginning of his presidency tried to make a deal with the United States to “give Julian Assange to the United States.”

“Moreno is absolutely submitted to the United States, he is doing his homework for the United States,” Correa claimed."

Assange has resided in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden on rape allegations. While that investigation was dropped by the judiciary, Assange still faces charges in Britain for violating bail conditions while fleeing, as well as the possibility of extradition to the United States for publishing sensitive government information on the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Former Ecuadorian President Correa himself is wanted in his homeland on suspicion of kidnapping, and has requested political asylum in Belgium.
