Hundreds gathered in New Delhi on Monday in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people during the first anniversary of the outbreak of the ongoing fighting in Gaza.

Footage shows protesters rallying with signs reading: 'Stop genocide, ceasefire now', 'End all wars for peace, prosperity and joy' and 'War: Good for few, bad for most'. Other demonstrators were also seen waving Palestinian flags during the rally.

"We are demanding that the Indian government, taking back from our anti-colonial legacy, realises that at this point of time the struggle of all the people who are struggling against an external force which is trying to rule and govern its land and people," said one student protester.

"India must stand with all of those struggling people," she continued. "We have an anti-colonial legacy and we must uphold it. Even the Indian government must now uphold it."

National Federation of Indian Women General Secretary Annie Raja also urged the Indian government to take a 'very firm position' on the conflict in Gaza.

"It is one thing that they are saying that the war should end and while recognising two independent countries - one is Palestine and one is Israel - the government should also have its acts in support of that statement and that position of India," she said.

Raja also criticised the US for backing Israel's actions in the Palestinian territories, stating: "we are telling the imperialist forces that you cannot continue your killing of people of the Palestinians and you cannot expand your war-mongering attitude or war-mongering position across the globe."

According to local media, the protest was organised by civil groups and left-wing parties such as the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, All India Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party.

Similar protests have erupted in countries such as New Zealand, Germany, France, Chile, Spain, Morocco, Australia, Mexico, Italy, and the US as Monday marks the first anniversary of Hamas' attack on Israel.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups launched an unprecedented assault on southern Israel. Israel reported that 1,139 people were killed, mostly civilians and that Hamas fighters had seized at least 251 hostages before returning to Gaza.

In response, Israel initiated an air campaign and a ground offensive into Gaza, where Palestinian authorities claim over 40,000 people have since been killed, although the death toll is thought to be higher.

Israel has strongly denied allegations of 'genocide', also made by a number of countries at the International Criminal Court, and says its actions in Gaza are in self-defence and against Hamas operatives and infrastructure.

A number of hostage-prisoner swaps have taken place, although talks to agree a permanent ceasefire have stalled. The conflict recently spread to Lebanon, where Israel launched a 'limited' ground incursion against militant group Hezbollah following a campaign of airstrikes. The sides have conducted cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
