Description

Rescuers were seen clearing debris on Thursday after an alleged Russian air strike hit Krivoy Rog, killing several people and injuring dozens, Ukrainian authorities reported.

Footage shows emergency workers using heavy machinery to perform rescue and clearing operations while locals can be seen gathering near the site in the aftermath of an alleged explosion in the city. Local authorities reported that an Iskander-M ballistic missile had hit, damaging dozens of buildings and public infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially wrote via his Telegram channel that six people were killed and 11 others injured. The number of casualties and wounded has increased to 9 killed and 29 injured at the time of publication.

Zelensky added that all 'necessary services' were available on site and went on to reiterate his call for more air defence units."Modern air defence systems are able to provide maximum protection of people, our cities, and our positions. And we need them as much as possible," the president wrote.

Russia has not commented on the specific strike at the time of publication. Moscow has repeatedly denied hitting civilian infrastructure and insisted only military-linked sites were targeted.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
