Thousands of Muslims took to the streets of Srinagar on Tuesday to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, who was born around 570 CE.
Footage from the event shows worshippers chanting, holding banners and flags, and participating in prayers as part of the Islamic celebration.
Toufeeq Hussain Mallik, a local, called for global Muslim unity in addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza. "We Muslims should unite and help the people of Palestine and Gaza and we must put our efforts to stop the ongoing genocide of innocent and unarmed Muslims in Gaza," he said. "We should unite and think about the sufferings of Muslims across the globe and especially for the people of Gaza; only then can we say that we are following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad."
Syed Muhammad Hussain, Principal of Jamia Bab-ul-ilm, emphasised the significance of the day. "Today we celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday and we will march on the streets to commemorate his birthday and his teachings," he stated. "This day also teaches us unity among Muslims across the globe and to follow the same teachings of the prophet of Islam so that no external powers could harm us and the flag of Islam and its teachings will spread all over the world."
The annual celebration, known as Mawlid al-Nabawi al-Sharif, is marked by prayers and Quranic recitations to honour the Prophet Muhammad's birth. Sunni Muslims and some Shia branches celebrate it on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal, while Twelver Shia Muslims observe it on the 17th of the month.
