The judge presiding over the trial of Derek Chauvin denied a motion brought forth by the defence team to postpone and change the location of the court proceedings.

"Unfortunately, I think the pre-trial publicity, in this case, will continue no matter how long we continue it. Perhaps some of it may with time be forgotten by people and as far as the change of venue, I not think that would give the defendant any kind of fair trial beyond what we are doing here. I don't think there is any place in the state of Minnesota that is not been subjected to the extreme amount of publicity of this case," said Judge Peter Cahill in Minneapolis on Friday.

Former police officer Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter for his actions leading to the killing of George Floyd. He had originally also been charged with third-degree murder, but that charge has since been dismissed.

The opening arguments are scheduled to start on March 29.

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin was filmed kneeling on Floyd's neck for several minutes during an arrest. Floyd's death rekindled the Black Lives Matter movement, sparking worldwide protests denouncing a pattern of unarmed black men, women, and children being killed by police.
