Locals in West Jerusalem reacted the morning after Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel on Saturday evening.

"I hope that Israel gives them some lessons [so that] they are going to understand who we are and we are the great army in the Middle East," said Shlomo, one resident of the area.

Others also expressed confidence in the Israeli Defense Forces' abilities to counter any Iranian attacks.

"We know that Israel can defend herself and we felt ok. We just went after the instructions and made all ok. We want peace," said another local, Noam.

"I think it is going to be a big war but Israel is very strong. We have enough forces… I hope everything will be peace," added Hannah, a local bakery worker.

Another local resident, Eve, said that Saturday night's attack was not the beginning of Israel's 'war with Iran', which she said 'started years ago'.

"They've been firing missiles in the north for months. So, yeah this came from Iran, [...] Hezbollah is a proxy of Iran," she claimed.

"I think Iran is a big problem here and not Israel," Noam added, "So, if Iran feels ok to send all Israeli people to the shelters, it's something bad. We need to think [about] how to solve it and how to make Iran think twice before they do something like this."

The attack came as a response to the alleged Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, which killed at least seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), including a senior Quds Force commander. Israel has not claimed responsibility for that strike.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) claimed Iran had launched '300 threats of various types' towards Israel, adding that '99%' of the rockets and drones had been intercepted. At the same time, defence minister Yoav Gallant reported that 'very little damage was caused' due to the attack.

IRGC Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri has warned that Tehran would launch a 'much bigger' offensive if Israel were to target Iranian soil in response to Saturday’s attack.

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said Washington had intercepted 'dozens of missiles and UAVs' before they had entered Israeli airspace. President Joe Biden reiterated his 'ironclad' support for Israel and said he would convene a G7 meeting on Sunday.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both sides to exercise restraint and said he was 'deeply alarmed', warning of a 'very real danger' of a 'major military confrontation' on multiple fronts in the Middle East.

Israel’s ambassador has requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting.
