Description

Nigerian police detained several demonstrators on Sunday in Lagos on the anniversary of the 2020 anti-police protests that ended in the deaths of activists.

The demonstrators gathered for a memorial procession at Lekki Toll Gate, where dozens of protesters were allegedly shot and killed on 20 October 2020 during a national protest called ‘EndSARS’.

Footage shows protesters being detained by police and continuing to chant demanding justice even after their imprisonment in a police wagon.

"Our brothers and sisters, they were also citizens that were killed here at the Lekki Toll Gate, four years ago, now we are here to commemorate, to celebrate their deaths, and the Nigerian Police--the Nigerian Police Force here--they pushed us, they fought us," a detainee explained.

"We are not the criminals, the police are criminals. Let them know, tell them now that the struggle we are fighting is for their children. We are fighting for their children as well," he continued.

"The police should know, all these things they are doing, they will surely pay for it, they will surely see it, this is unfair, unjust," he added.

In October 2020, the 'EndSARS' protest turned into a nationwide demonstration against the alleged inhumane treatment of Nigerians by a now-disbanded special police unit known as the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The protest lasted for several days until soldiers reportedly shot several protesters at the toll gate in Lekki on 20 October.

Some police officers were charged over the incident, but protesters feel that this is not enough and that police brutality has yet to end.
