Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Gazprom and the company's partners on the completion of Nord Stream 2 during an online meeting held from St Petersburg on Wednesday.
"I would like to congratulate Gazprom and your partners in Nord Stream-2 on completing the work on this major additional pipeline and on the fact that it is ready for operation," said Putin.
At the meeting, Alexey Miller, the deputy chairperson at Gazprom’s board of directors announced that at 12:58 (local time), the second string of Nord Stream 2 was filled with gas.
“Both the first and the second strings of the Nord Stream 2 are under the operating pressure and fully ready for use,” said Miller.
Putin noted that the pipeline was to supply Europe with 55 billion cubic metres of fuel.
The Russian leader stressed that "this new route, an additional route, will certainly serve to stabilise prices on the European market".
The construction of the pipeline was fully completed in September, although in order to start its operations, the Nord Stream 2 project needs to be certified by German and European regulators.
In December, Germany's Federal Network Agency said that a decision on Nord Stream 2 will not be made until June 2022.
