Description

Thousands gathered in Baghdad to commemorate the second anniversary of the assassination of the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Qassem Soleimani and the leader of the Iraqi Popular Mobilisation Forces, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, on Saturday.

Participants could be seen marching with images of Al-Muhandis and Soleimani, whilst chanting slogans.

Local media reported that the march was held with the participation of the head of the Popular Mobilisation Forces Authority, Faleh al-Fayyad, and the head of the Parliamentary Al Fatah Alliance, Hadi al-Amiri, as well as personalities representing the popular mobilisation factions and Iraqi clans.

Soleimani was killed by a US air strike on Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Friday morning, January 3 2020, along with Jamal Jaafar Muhammad Ali Ibrahim, known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

The Pentagon issued a statement confirming that the air strike was made by direct order of US President Donald Trump at the time, describing it as a "decisive defensive measure to protect American personnel abroad."

On January 8 2020, Iran targeted two bases hosting US forces in Iraq with missiles, in retaliation for the assassination of Soleimani.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, stressed that the response to the assassination would not be just a single operation, but "a long path that should lead to the removal of the US military presence" from the Middle East.
