Ethiopian Muslims gathered at Grand Anwar mosque in Addis Ababa on Sunday to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad in approximately 570 CE.

The event was attended by Sheikh Abdulkerim Bedredin, the Vice President of Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council who thanked the current Ethiopian government for their support, highlighting that it wasn't always the case with past governments.

"Our Prophet Muhammad birthday is not an easy event, it is a unique phenomenon. The world's direction has completely changed upside down because of our prophet's birthday," an attendee said.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed extended his good wishes to Ethiopian Muslims ahead of Mawlid calling on worshippers to reflect on his contribution to the world.

The prophet's birthday, also known as Mawlid al-Nabawi al-Sharif, is generally celebrated by Sunni Muslims and some Shiaa branches each year on the 12th day of Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, while Twelver Shiaa Muslims celebrate it on the 17th.

On Mawlid, Muslims from all around the world pray and read the Quran to mark the birth of Muhammad, who was born in 570 AD.
