Description

Berlin residents were seen queuing outside a polling station on Sunday, as voting took place for the country's 2021 federal elections.

Federal Election Commissioner Georg Thiel said in a statement that voters should not have to wait hours to cast their vote, amid reports that some polling stations had run out of ballot papers and had been asked to return several hours later.

Thiel said that many election workers had been called in last minute, and some incorrect ballots had been issued at several polling stations.

According to the Federal Election Commissioner press office, the voter turnout at 14:00 (local time; 12:00 GMT) was 36.5 percent.

For the first time in 16 years, the election is taking place without the participation of the incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Social Democrat's Olaf Scholz and Christian Democratic Union's Armin Laschet are neck-and-neck in the lead, according to the latest polls, with Scholz marginally ahead.
