Description

Hundreds of Lebanese citizens, led by families of Beirut port explosion victims, gathered outside the Justice Palace in Beirut on Wednesday, to protest the suspension of the blast investigation by judge Tareq Al-Bitar.

Demonstrators were seen chanting anti-Hezbollah slogans and holding signs reading “We shall never forget”, “Will continue until justice is served ” and “Your Immunity has fallen”.

“Now we have become a country occupied by Iran because of Hezbollah. Two months ago, Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised speech that the judge must close the case. We say to Nasrallah that we won’t get tired or close the case, we shall remain here”, a protester said.

The protest came two days after the investigation was suspended after accused former Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk formally notified judge Tareq Al-Bitar to handle the case to another judge. The hearing sessions set to interrogate two Brigadier-Generals Kamil Daher and Ghassan Gharz Eddine were also cancelled.

On August 4 2020, a massive explosion at Beirut's port devastated much of the Lebanese capital, claiming 220 lives and injuring 6,500. Some 300,000 people were displaced from their homes.
