Description

Thousands of people in Pakistan’s Karachi demonstrated in solidarity with Gaza and its people on Sunday, on the eve of the first anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war which erupted on October 7, 2023.

The footage shows thousands gathering in the streets, raising Palestinian and Pakistani flags, chanting anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans, as well as in solidarity with Palestine, such as "Jerusalem is ours". Women and children can be seen holding banners with the flags of Palestine and Lebanon.

"The people of Karachi gathered here in their millions to show the world that we are with the people of Palestine and that Israel is a wrongfully created state which must be stopped. Otherwise the war would spread in the world and the world will face the consequences. It is about time that Israel is stopped," said Hafiz Naeem, chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan.

“This protest is a wake up call for everyone, the leaders of the country. It is a call to the USA to tell them that they are siding with the terrorists and to the United Nations who are not helping out the weak and not doing their job properly,” he added.

Protester Hina Shah said ‘we just demand justice’, calling for Israel to ‘end this’ and describing its conduct ‘something that cannot be accepted being a human, being a muslim’.

Monday marks the first anniversary of the October 7 war.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups launched an unprecedented assault on southern Israel. Israel reported that 1,139 people were killed, mostly civilians and that Hamas fighters seized 251 hostages before returning to Gaza.

In response, Israel initiated an air campaign and a ground offensive into Gaza, where Palestinian authorities claim over 40,000 people have since been killed, although the death toll is thought to be much higher.

Hostilities have since escalated, leading to cross-border strikes between Israel and Iran, Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Lebanon, where Israel last week launched 'limited' ground operations in its conflict with Hezbollah.
