Description

Archive footage filmed on May 15-18, 1989, features the USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev visiting China for bilateral talks with the country’s premier, Deng Xiaoping.

The two can be seen greeting each other, shaking hands, and holding discussions while sitting at the table with other members of the delegations in Beijing.

Footage also features Gorbachev and his wife, Raisa, visiting the Great Wall, and talking to Chinese youth representatives. They also visited one of the industrial companies near Shanghai and had a brief talk with the workers.

The summit between Gorbachev and Xiaoping is believed to have signalled the formal end of decades of hostility between the Soviet Union and China. The meeting was the first between the two countries since 1959 and was reportedly described by both Moscow and Beijing as marking the beginning of normalisation of Sino-Soviet relations.

This archive footage is released as part of the '100 Key Events in Russia in the 20th and 21st Centuries', a project with the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
