Jury selection was delayed while an appeal carries on over a possible restoration of a third-degree murder charge.
The Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled Friday that Judge Peter Cahill must reassess reinstating the third-degree murder charge against Chauvin.
Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter for his actions leading to George Floyd’s death. He had originally also been charged with third-degree murder, but that charge has since been dismissed.
The opening arguments are scheduled to start on March 29.
On May 25, 2020, Chauvin, who was then a police officer, was filmed kneeling on George Floyd's neck for several minutes in Minneapolis. Floyd's death sparked nation-wide protests denouncing a pattern of unarmed black men, women, and children being killed by police.
