The 'flag of revenge' was raised on Wednesday over the Jamkaran Mosque in the Iranian city of Qom following the assassination of the head of Hamas' political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
Footage shows a man climbing the mosque's dome to hoist a flag which reads, "O revenge of Hussein," a phrase used by Shiite Muslims.
Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stated on X, formerly Twitter, that "the criminal and terrorist Zionist regime martyred our dear guest in our house and thus prepared the ground for a harsh punishment for itself."
“We consider it our duty to avenge his blood in this bitter and difficult incident that happened in the territory of the Islamic Republic,” Khamenei added.
At dawn on Wednesday, Hamas mourned the head of its political bureau, who "was assassinated along with his companion in an Israeli raid on their residence in Tehran."
The Palestinian Authority and Iran also announced three days of mourning, with several countries and movements condemning the assassination of Haniyeh, including Russia, China, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Qatar, the Sultanate of Oman, the Taliban, the Hezbollah, the political bureau of Ansar al-Allah (Houthis), and many others.
Ismail Abdel Salam Ahmed Haniyeh had joined Hamas since its establishment in 1987 and then was elected head of the movement's reform and change list in the Palestinian legislative elections. In 2006, he assumed the premiership in the Palestinian government after Hamas’s victory of the legislative elections. Following the spilt between Fatah and Hamas, he took over the administration of the Gaza Strip as prime minister and later was elected as the head of the political bureau of Hamas.
