Description

Migrants gathered around a truck to collect provisions reportedly distributed by United Nations staff at the Polish-Belarusian border near Bruzgi on Thursday where many have gathered in the hopes of crossing into the EU.

One woman who had apparently lost consciousness was seen being carried to safety on a stretcher and receiving treatment from medical staff.

In addition, the Belarusian side sent dry firewood for the refugees, so that those at the border would be able to build a fire and keep warm in the cold weather.

Tensions between the EU and Belarus have been escalating in recent months, with the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately directing migrants over the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU, a claim which he denies.

President of the European Council Charles Michel said that EU borders were facing a 'brutal hybrid attack' in comments made on Tuesday.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas meanwhile has called on the EU to 'extend and tighten' sanctions against Belarus.

Poland strengthened border patrols on the frontier with Belarus on October 20 and put up a barbed wire fence in place in an attempt to stem the flow.
