Description

Heavy gunfire broke out between military and unknown gunmen in the open streets of Beirut on Thursday during a protest related to the Beirut blast.

Numerous soldiers were seen exchanging fire in populated areas as they took cover and returned gunfire came from apartment blocks. Injured people were taken away and military vehicles were called in.

According to eyewitnesses, unknown individuals had fired shots from a building near the palace of justice, where a protest by the Shiite Amal movement was planned against investigating judge Tarek Bitar, who led the investigation into the August 2020 Beirut port explosion that claimed more than 190 lives and caused massive damage.

A court of cassation rejected a request by two Shiite ex-ministers to remove Bitar shortly after which gunfire broke out in the street. At least six people were killed, according to Interior Minister Bassam Maulawi, and 30 others were injured, according to the Red Cross.
