Turkish police freed seven hostages who had been held at gunpoint in a US Procter & Gamble factory in Gebze and arrested the suspect on Thursday evening.

Footage shows people gathering near the scene ahead of the end of the incident, waiting for news of their friends and loved ones, as well as police officers guarding the cordoned-off area.

According to media reports the lone gunman was protesting against Israel's military operation in Gaza.

"We do not know the position inside, but we are waiting with fear and anxiety, we have not received any news from inside, we call on the authorities to solve this incident as soon as possible," said one bystander.

According to media reports, special forces units arrived following the incident, which began at 15:00 local time. They apprehended the suspect while he was in the bathroom, following a nine hour standoff, while the factory workers - six men and one woman - were released unharmed.

Photos and videos released on social media appear to show the assailant wearing a Palestinian scarf to cover his face next to pro-Palestinian graffiti on the wall behind him.

P&G thanked the 'authorities and first responders' for their 'courage and professionalism'.
