Description

Hundreds of protesters gathered in the DRC’s Beni on Friday to demand 'climate justice' ahead of the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Footage shows demonstrators marching through the streets while brandishing placards and banners bearing slogans such as, 'one planet, one chance'.

"We're marching today for climate justice because some of the world's most developed countries are polluting humanity, and now it's Africa that's paying the price,” a protester said.

“I'm raising my voice to be heard in the whole world, so that all those countries that pollute, companies and others, all the players involved in climate change be aware, to act now, because our lives depend on it,” added a second.

The 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) kicks off in Baku on Monday, November 11.

Around 50,000 government officials, policymakers, investors, and stakeholders will gather to address climate targets, financing, and strategies to maintain the 1.5°C global temperature goal.

Setting a new climate finance objective is high on the agenda, as well as encouraging nations to readdress their commitments to carbon neutrality. Leaders will also focus on financing for developing countries to facilitate the transition towards low-emission, resilient economies.

The conference will run until November 22.
