Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) joined in the Olympic spirit on Monday, engaging in a series of zero-gravity activities to mark the 2024 Paris Olympics. The diverse group of NASA astronauts and Russian cosmonauts participated in simulated weightlifting, running, discus throwing, gymnastics, and shot put, all in the unique environment of space.
Flight Engineer Matthew Dominick, who will be on the ISS until September, wrapped up their video message by acknowledging the challenge of competing under gravity.
"Over the past few days, on the International Space Station, we have had an absolute blast pretending to be Olympic athletes. We can imagine how hard this must be, to be such a world-class athlete, doing your sports under actual gravity. So, from all of us aboard the ISS, to every single athlete in the Olympic Games, Godspeed!" Dominick said.
The ISS crew includes six NASA astronauts and Russian cosmonauts Nikolai Chub, Alexander Grebenken, and Oleg Kononenko, who is leading the Expedition 71 mission.
The 2024 Olympic Games takes place in Paris from July 26 to August 11, marking the third time the French capital has hosted the Summer Olympics, following the 1900 and 1924 games. The Olympics saw a historic opening ceremony held on the Seine River, marking the first time the ceremony took place outside a stadium.
