Baader Bank financial expert Robert Halver stated that Germany and Europe could face a rise in gas prices in the coming weeks. The comments came at Frankfurt's stock exchange amid fears of problems due to Belarus and Russia and Nord Stream 2 certification issues on Tuesday.

Speaking during an interview at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Halver explained how the situation at the Belarussian border could affect gas prices.

"Of course, the conflict between Belarus and Poland is actually playing a role here. And Russia is surely playing a major role in the background. And it must be spoken out clearly: We don`t want to get blackmailed. It is clearly possible that gas prices will rise now. But Germany and the EU are also looking for alternatives," stated Halver.

"Right now both sides are raising the pressure. The Russians want to sell, but they can't if the [Nord Stream 2] pipeline in the northern sea is not open," he added, stressing that "Eventually, a compromise must be found."

Thousands of refugees remain stranded at the border between Belarus and Poland, sparking a political dispute between the EU and Belarus.
