Hundreds of German tourists have begun arriving in Mallorca, as seen on Friday, to enjoy a beach holiday at the popular tourist destination a week before Easter.

In an interview, Pedro Marin, a restaurant manager in Mallorca expressed excitement at the prospect of accommodating tourists over the Easter holiday period.

"The truth is we are very excited since we have very good prospects for this Easter, a lot of work has been done, with the issue of safety and hygiene and the prospect of 11 hotels being open, with very good occupancy rates according to what we have been told. We hope that everything goes well for the next new season," he said.

Marta, a local resident, noted that the island requires both domestic and international travel to keep the economy ticking over during a challenging time. "It is important and necessary for tourism to come, both from the peninsula and from any country with the necessary measures so that the economy keeps going, because we are in a very difficult and quite complicated situation," she said.

Thousands booked flights to the island in March after German authorities removed the island from its list of COVID-19 risk areas, lifting the requirements of a return quarantine and a COVID-19 test.

On Thursday, however, the German authorities announced a change of rules, indicating that all travellers returning to Germany must return a negative COVID-19 test before boarding their flights from Monday onwards.

According to the latest figures published by health authorities, Mallorca saw 40 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with a 14-day cumulative incidence rate of 53.23 per 100,000 people.
