Former National Rally (RN) president Marine Le Pen said that 'hope is rekindled' in France as exit polls placed her party with a decisive lead in the first round of the country's snap legislative election on Sunday.

"My fellow countrymen, on this June 30, 2024, hope is rekindled in our nation," Le Pen told supporters in Henin-Beaumont. "Long live the Republic, and long live France!"

Le Pen also called on her supporters to 'mobilise' for the second round of voting on July 7 'so that the people prevail'.

"By voting for National Rally candidates, you will help our country gather the strength of unity and fraternity," she added.

According to the final results published by France's Interior Ministry, RN headed the polls on Sunday, securing 33.15 per cent of the vote, while left-leaning NFP came second with 27.99 per cent. President Emmanuel Macron's Ensemble alliance came third with just 20.76 per cent.

One voter claimed RN's 'commitment to security' during the election campaign had 'resonated' with him and was a decisive factor in his choice of party.

"As you can see, I am young, just 23 years old, and I will fight for this France of my youth until my last breath," he said.

A second supporter described RN's performance on Sunday as a 'significant victory', claiming the party had 'united more than one-third' of the French population.

"We are present in most constituencies, having secured victory in more than a dozen of them already. We are moving calmly towards the second round and aiming for the absolute majority," he added.

President Macron called the snap legislative vote following huge losses for his Renaissance party in the EU Parliament elections, which saw a massive surge for National Rally. The next election was not expected until 2027.

Across the bloc, conservative, nationalist and anti-immigration groups also made significant gains. Many called for a focus on domestic priorities amid the soaring cost of living, as well as lower taxes, better border security and an end to foreign military interventions, such as in Ukraine.

France's election is held over two rounds, on June 30 and July 7, electing all 577 members of the National Assembly. Macron has not held a majority in parliament since 2022 and has used executive powers to pass legislation like his pension reforms, which have seen massive protests.
