Hundreds gathered in Tehran on Wednesday to condemn the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Footage from the protest shows demonstrators holding flags of Iran, Palestine, and Hezbollah, along with placards bearing slogans such as "Down with Israel" and "I'm not bloodthirsty."

"People of Iran and now Tehran have gathered at Palestine Square today to voice their detestation of this horrible behaviour that is against humanity by the Zionist regime [Israel]," said Hekmat, a Tehran resident.

Hekmat added that the protesters are awaiting a "logical and firm response" from Iran's armed forces.

"If they [Israel] cross the red lines we will have to give them a firmer response. Regarding the fact that how the response should be, experts should comment on that," said another Tehran resident, Hossein Habibzadeh.

Hamas confirmed the assassination in a statement, mourning the loss of Haniyeh and his companion. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack or issued a comment at the time of publication.

The Palestinian Authority and Iran have declared three days of mourning, and various countries and groups, including Russia, China, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Qatar, the Taliban, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, have condemned the assassination. The White House has acknowledged reports of Haniyeh's death.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously indicated that Mossad operations against Hamas leaders were part of Israel’s strategy.

Ismail Haniyeh, a founding member of Hamas in 1987, served in several key roles, including as the group's political bureau head and as prime minister of the Palestinian government following Hamas’s 2006 electoral victory.
