Description

Archive footage filmed in June 1966 features French President Charles de Gaulle during his 10-day visit to the Soviet Union.

General de Gaulle can be seen arriving to Moscow and delivering a speech in front of thousands of Muscovites gathered to welcome a distinguished guest. He also travelled throughout the country and visited Volga region where he was presented a 30-kg sturgeon. Besides that, French leader met USSR's Leonid Brezhnev and visited Soviet army base.

It is believed that de Gaulle's visit during the Cold War opened up new prospects for Western-Soviet cooperation. He demonstrated to the United States and Europe the need for cooperation with the USSR, despite ideological contradictions.

Speaking in Moscow, de Gaulle said in Russian: "Long live Russia! Long live the friendship between Russia and France!"

The footage also features Charles de Gaulle during his short visit to Moscow in 1944. French general can be seen handing out French orders and medals to the fighters of the Escadron de Chasse 2/30 Normandie-Niemen.

This archive footage is released as part of the '100 Key Events in Russia in the 20th and 21st Centuries', a project with the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
