Description

A local seafood restaurant is offering several insect-based dishes after Singapore recently approved 16 insects as safe for human consumption earlier this month.

Footage captured on Wednesday shows an un-bee-lievable display of bugs on the menu of the House of Seafood restaurant in Singapore. The process of the insects being cleaned and prepared prior to being added to a variety of seafood dishes and dessert is also shown.

The restaurant's CEO, Francis Ng, claimed that two of their chefs had to be sent overseas to train in order to ensure that the wriggly creatures are "well preserved and that the proteins are not destroyed."

"Initially I think [the chefs] were very sceptical of that, they said that insects — a lot of people don't like it," he said. "They definitely said that it would not work, but for me, I said it was a must to do this for the future.”

Ng shared hopes that more residents of Singapore as well as the foreigners will be able to try the delectable insects, adding that the restaurant is proud to have perfected their buzz-are dishes.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced earlier this month that 16 insects such as crickets, grubs, moth larvae and a specific species of honeybee are found to be safe for human consumption.

The agency says it has taken this decision because the insect industry is 'nascent and insects are a new food item' in Singapore, according to media reports.
